A Seabrook woman remains hospitalized nearly a week after her car collided with another vehicle on U.S. 278 in Bluffton, a hospital spokesman said.

Gwendolyn Smalls, born in 1958, was airlifted to Memorial University Medical Center in Savannah with head trauma June 6 following an accident at the highway's intersection with Simmonsville Road, according to a Bluffton Police Department report.

She was in fair condition Thursday, according to hospital spokesman Michael Notrica.

Smalls was driving a 2000 Mercury west on U.S. 278 at 4:20 p.m. when a 2004 Toyota traveling east crossed the median and struck her head-on, the report said. Both vehicles overturned several times, according to the report.

The driver of the Toyota, 44-year-old Todd Crawford of Hilton Head Island, told police he had lost consciousness before the wreck. He was not injured but was transported to Memorial University Medical Center, as well, the report said. No citations have been issued in the wreck.
