A Georgia man was beaten and robbed by two strangers he met on the beach on Hilton Head Island, according to a Beaufort County Sheriff's Office report.

The 23-year-old victim from Evans, Ga., met a man and woman at 12:45 a.m. Wednesday on the beach at Palmetto Dunes, the report said. After they talked and drank for a while, the man asked the victim if he wanted to buy drugs, according to the report.

When the victim said he did not have any cash and started to walk away, the man punched him in the face and back, and the woman tried to gouge his eyes with her fingers, the report said.

The man punched the victim dozens of times in the head and choked him, the report said. The suspects, who have not been identified, stole his wallet and cellphone before leaving.

The victim was treated at a hospital for his injuries, and the investigation continues, Sgt. Robin McIntosh said.
