A Hilton Head Island man was charged with attempted murder Monday in connection with a shooting incident last week, according to the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office.

Gary Nunes Jr., 31, is accused of opening fire on a 27-year-old man who was driving into the Marsh Point Apartments on Hilton Head on June 1, Sgt. Robin McIntosh said. The victim and two friends went to the apartment complex to pick up a bicycle from a relative and were approaching the 400 building when someone began shooting at their car, according to a Sheriff's Office news release.

The victim stopped the car, and he and his passengers ran as a suspect chased them and continued to shoot, the release said. He and the passengers got a ride with another friend who was leaving the area, according to the release.

The victim's car and two other vehicles were damaged by bullets, the release said.

Deputies believe the incident might have been retaliation for a dispute that involved the victim and several other people earlier that day at the Hilton Head Island Recreation Center, according to the release.

Nunes was charged with attempted murder and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He remains at the Beaufort County Detention Center awaiting a bond hearing on the attempted murder charge.

Nunes, who was out on a $90,000 bond on five counts of drug possession and distribution in February, was also charged with possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance in connection with another incident, according to court records and McIntosh.

A judge set a $70,000 bond for those charges, according to court records.
