Beaufort's Fickes looks to defend SCGA Junior Championship title

sports@islandpacket.comJune 10, 2014

Beaufort High's Josh Fickes hits a tee shot at the Golden Bear High School Invitational in February on Hilton Head Island.

Beaufort High School's Josh Fickes will look to defend his title when the S.C. Golf Association's Junior Championship tees off Tuesday at Willow Creek Golf Club in Greer.

The last player to successfully defended the S.C. Junior Championship was Tommy Biershenk Jr. in 1990-1991. Ironically, Fickes, like Biershenk, will attend Clemson.

Several other area golfers are likely contenders, as well.

Bluffton's Trace Crowe, an Auburn commit, recently won the Carolinas Golf Association's Creed Junior Boys Championship at Camden Country Club. Bryson Nimmer, Crowe's Hilton Head Christian Academy teammate and the 2013 SCJGA Jimmy Self Champion would like to join his father Tony as a state champion. The elder Nimmer took the title in 1978.

As always, the Jimmy Self wraps up two days prior to the SCGA Junior Championship. No player has ever player gone back-to-back..

The low eight scores of the tournament will automatically qualify for the 39th Annual Georgia-S.C. Junior Team Matches to be played at Ansley Golf Club -- Settindown Creek in Roswell, Ga.

For the seventh consecutive year The Heritage Classic Foundation has signed on as presenting sponsor.

56th Annual SCGA Junior Championship
