My soon-to-be home is a deep shade of red

newsroom@islandpacket.comMay 26, 2014

I'll be moving to Beaufort in three years when I retire. I've been reading the newspaper's opinion page and looking at other local information sites and have learned a lot about how area Republicans think.

It's simply stunning that so many people are so entrenched in the extreme right. I am a Democrat, and disagree with everything I have read.

My hope is to gather Democrats in the area (if there are any) and try to counter some of this. S.C. lawmakers have put forth legislation to ban the Affordable Care Act. This will hurt thousands of South Carolinians by taking away the only chance those with pre-existing conditions have to get coverage, and, in some cases, life-saving treatment. I may be one of them since I'm leaving my job before I reach 65.

Think of all the people who have heart conditions and cancer. You're willing to let them die? I guess that was a rhetorical question since we know the horrible answer.

I hope the fishing is better than the politics.
