A burglar ransacked a St. Helena Island home this week and left a message behind -- written in chocolate syrup, according to a Beaufort County Sheriff's Office report.

The Seaside Road residents told deputies they came home Thursday night to find someone had pried open a door, scattered their belongings and scrawled "$ G" on the entryway and kitchen floors in syrup, the report said. A DVD player, speaker box and a window-mounted air conditioning unit, worth a total of $925, were missing, according to the report.

The burglary occurred sometime after Wednesday night. The residents said they did not know the meaning of the symbols.
