Hilton Head's Carter wins opener in NCAA singles

University of North Carolina freshman Hayley Carter won her first-round match Wednesday at the NCAA Women's Tennis Singles Championship in Athens, Ga.

The seventh-seeded Carter, a Hilton Head Island native and Smith Stearns product, cruised into the second round with a 6-4, 6-3, win over Georgia's Maho Kowase.

Carter will play against Desirae Krawczyk of Arizona State in the second round at 11 a.m. Thursday.

In doubles action on Thursday, the third-ranked duo of Carter and freshmen Jamie Loeb will face Tina Jiang and Crystal Leung from Columbia at 4:30 p.m.
