Hilton Head Island ace Mat Clark named 3-A All-State

One year after raising eyebrows during an impressive freshman year that landed him on the Island Packet and Beaufort Gazette's all-area team, Hilton Head Island pitcher Mat Clark was named to the S.C. Baseball Coaches Association's Class 3-A all-state team.

Clark, a lefthander, went 6-1 for the Seahawks, posting a .058 earned run average over 53.2 innings. He gave up only four walks all season, striking out 82.

"It felt great," Clark said. "It's always good news."

Clark's strength, according to coach Blair Carson, is his ability to throw any pitch for a strike in any count. Clark doesn't rely on velocity to overpower batters, instead focusing his approach on his tremendous control.

"That's what keeps hitters off-balance," Carson said.

Clark, who throws a fastball, cutter and curveball -- the last of which he feels is his best pitch -- will work on a changeup over the summer, adding another weapon to his arsenal. Carson says that college programs have already taken notice.

"He's already drawn tons of interest," Carson said. "That's definitely going to be available to him."
