Four Democratic candidates for state superintendent of education will debate from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday on S.C. ETV. The debate is the first of five that ETV and a group of S.C. newspapers -- including The Island Packet and The Beaufort Gazette -- are sponsoring.

The debates will be streamed live on our website.

In the Lowcountry, the debates also are being televised on S.C. ETV (Time Warner Channel 6, Hargray Channel 7, Comcast Channel 12 and Charter Channel 8).

Who? Appearing will be former state Education Department official Montrio Belton of Fort Mill, former S.C. Education Association president Sheila Gallagher of Florence, state Rep. Jerry Govan of Orangeburg and former S.C. State dean of graduate studies Thomas Thompson of Forest Acres.

What's next? GOP candidates for superintendent will debate Tuesday from 7 to 8 p.m. Subsequent debates will feature the Democratic candidates for the U.S. Senate seat now occupied by Republican Tim Scott, the GOP candidates for lieutenant governor, and the Republican candidates for the Senate seat held by Lindsey Graham.
