The Lowcountry Council of Governments plans two sessions Thursday on future development near Beaufort's two Marine Corps bases.

The sessions are part of studies aimed at finding ways to continue civilian development around Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort and Recruit Depot Parris Island while keeping operations at the installations safe, said Ginnie Kozak, planning director for the council of governments.

A partnership of planning officials from the council, the bases and various government entities is participating in the studies, which began in January. Once completed, the findings must be approved by each entity before being acted on.

Thursday's meetings will be in Battery Creek High School's media room. The first will be at 3:30 p.m. to discuss Parris Island and the second at 5:30 p.m. to discuss the air station.

The council of governments received a U.S. Department of Defense grant to pay for 90 percent of the project, Kozak said. The partners are paying the rest.

The studies are expected to be done within 18 months, Kozak said. Additional public-comment sessions will be held as the studies continue, she said.
