Sand Sharks tee off Tuesday in NAIA women's golf championship

The USC Beaufort women's golf team will tee off for the fifth consecutive year in the NAIA National Championships.

Sand Sharks received an at-large bid into the 27-team field competing for the national championship Tuesday through Saturday at Wilderness Ridge Golf Club in Lincoln, Neb.

No. 9 USCB is led by first-year coach Alexis Bennett, whose team jumped three spots in n the final regular-season poll after a runner-up finish at the Sun Conference Championships.

USC Beaufort is led by All-Sun Conference junior Samantha O'Donnell, a Hilton Head Island product. She is joined in the lineup by senior Kendra Collins, a Bluffton product, junior Tori DeGroodt, sophomore Hayley Miller and sophomore Lina Sekerkova. Junior Lindsey Mapes rounds out the team.

The Sand Sharks failed to qualify for nationals in their inaugural season in 2009 but have made it every year since. Their best finish was a seventh-place showing in 2010.

NAIA Women's Golf National Championships

Who: 27 teams (18 automatic qualifiers, 10 at-large teams and Doane, the host school) and 10 individual qualifiers.

What: 72 holes of stroke play over four days.

When: Play begins at 8:30 a.m., Tuesday through Friday.

Where: Wilderness Ridge Golf Club, Lincoln Neb.
