Superintendent candidate to speak at anniversary

S.C. superintendent of education candidate Jerry N. Govan Jr. will be the keynote speaker for the Northern Beaufort County Democratic Club's 11th anniversary celebration May 31.

The event will be from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Grand Army Hall, 706 Newcastle St., and is free and open to the public.

Govan, D-Orangeburg, has represented House District 95 since 1992 and is a former S.C. Legislative Black Caucus chairman. He also is the Orangeburg County School District attendance supervisor, owner of the Govan Insurance Agency and an associate minister at Olive Grove Missionary Baptist Church.

At the event, club treasurer Ted Humphrey will receive the club's first Sam Svalina-Lawrence "Baby" Washington Distinguished Community Service Award.
