A Bluffton man was shot after a home invader entered his home through an unlocked door Monday morning, according to a Beaufort County Sheriff's Office news release.

The 49-year-old victim was sleeping in his home at 28 Hubbard Lane in Bluffton when the handgun-wielding man entered and demanded money, the release said.

The victim handed over money and several shots were fired in an ensuing struggle, the release said.

After shooting the victim, the suspect is believed to have fled in a vehicle, the release said.

Deputies responded at about 5 a.m. Monday.

The gunshot victim was taken to Memorial University Medical Center in Savannah, the release said. His condition was not reported.

The victim's girlfriend was present at the time of the incident and was unharmed.

The suspect is described as a black male, 20 to 30 years old, about 6 feet tall, weighting 160 pounds, wearing a red shirt with a yellow strip, a dark colored baseball cap and a red bandana over his face, the release said.

The Sheriff's Office thinks the suspect fled in a vehicle, the release said.
