A Bluffton man was charged with child neglect Thursday, accused of causing a wreck last year by assaulting his wife while she was driving, according to the Bluffton Police Department.

Ernesto Hernandez, 33, was arrested in Ridgeland on warrants relating to a Jan. 1, 2013, accident, Capt. Joseph Manning said. Hernandez was passenger in his wife's car traveling on May River Road near Pin Oak Street when he became upset and struck the woman in the face, Capt. Joseph Manning said.

The wife lost control of the car and drove into a ditch, Manning said. Children in the back seat were not injured, he said.

The wife suffered a black eye from the punch and was transported to Hilton Head Hospital for observation, according to police. Hernandez, who was intoxicated at the time of the incident, fled, Manning said. He was arrested Thursday.

He was charged Thursday with child neglect and two counts of criminal domestic violence. Hernandez remained at the Beaufort County Detention Center Saturday, pending a bond hearing, according to the jail log.
