A Savannah animal control officer sacrificed his lunch to rescue a dog trapped on a bridge support 30 feet above a busy interstate highway Thursday.

Traffic was halted on I-516 at Ga. 25 in Savannah while two Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police animal control officers lured the small dog with a sandwich, according to a news release.

The mixed-breed dog, now called "Zaxby" after the sacrificed lunch, will be put up for adoption after a medical evaluation.

Officer Larry Rountree allowed the dog to finish the sandwich, the release said.
