How fast can they fly a second time?

The S.C. High School League track and field championships start today at Spring Valley High School in northeast Columbia with Beaufort High School trying to follow up a dramatic finish in 2013.

Beaufort High's 4x400-meter relay, which set a state record in 2013 in winning gold, is back to defend with a little different look. Nathan Parker is the only returner from a group that ran 3:16.35 in 2013 to edge Spring Valley and break a 17-year-old record.

The Eagles' seed time of 3:20.60 is almost four seconds faster than Northwestern.

Among those vying for individual state titles will be Beaufort High's Bre-Anna Heyward-White, who qualified in four events and won the 400 and was part of the winning 4x400 relay at the Class 4-A qualifier.-meter

Beaufort High sophomore Jackie Barnes' seed mark of 12 feet is best in the Class 4-A girls pole vault. She will try to break the state record of 12-7 set by Greenville's Sandi Morris in 2010.

Barnes works with Morris's former coach, Rusty Shealy, in Columbia.

She cleared 12 feet, 9 inches at a meet in Jacksonville, Fla., earlier this year to temporarily hold the national record for sophomores. She cleared 12 feet, 6 inches in winning the Beaufort Track Classic in April.

Beaufort High's Michael Dickson enters as a favorite in the 110 hurdles after winning the Class 4-A qualifier.

Battery Creek junior Quamecha Morrison qualified again in the girls high jump and will defend her state title in Class 2-A. The Whale Branch Early College High School boys 4x800 relay will try to defend its gold medal from 2013, with Damian Brown and Devonta Glover the returning members.

Whale Branch's Kemoni Jenkins qualified for four events in the Class 1-A girls meet -- 100 hurdles, 400 hurdles, pole vault and 4x400 relay. Hilton Head Island High School's Rachel Friend will compete for the girls 800 title after finishing second at the Class 3-A qualifier.
