A wrecked boat drifting upside down in Calibogue Sound was removed early Thursday, according to S.C. Department of Natural Resources officials.

The boat was towed by a salvage company at the request of its owner, 1st Sgt. Robbie Smith said. It was moved to Broad Creek Marina and did not appear to leave behind debris, he said.

The 30-foot vessel had drifted for a few days in the sound off the south end of Hilton Head Island.

It concerned some Harbour Town Yacht Basin employees and boaters, who called it a hazard. The U.S. Coast Guard issued warnings to boaters every few hours to watch out for the vessel, according to Lt. Shannon Peifer.

"We're glad it's gone," Leslie Whitener, the yacht basin's assistant harbormaster, said Thursday.

The boat floated into the sound after smashing into a jetty Saturday near the mouth of the Savannah River.

Coast Guard rescuers at Tybee Island, Ga., saw flares in the sky and arrived to find two passengers and two dogs in the water near the capsized boat, according to Peifer. The four were rescued and were uninjured, she said.

Authorities declined to give the owner's name. The boat is registered in Florida.
