Armed man barricades himself in home before responders intervene

The Beaufort County Sheriff's Office sent emergency responders to a Lady's Island residence Wednesday night after an armed man barricaded himself in his home.

Shortly before 6 p.m., the man, who lives on Wiggins Road, barricaded himself and threatened to harm himself with a gun, according to the sheriff's department. The man's wife, who was home at the time, got out safely and called 911, according to the department.

At about 10:45 p.m., the man exited the house, and responders took him for medical treatment. No charges are expected against him.

There was no threat to the community, according to an alert from the sheriff's department.

Responders included the sheriff's department SWAT team, the sheriff's department's crisis-management team, EMS and the Lady's Island-St. Helena Fire District.
