Literacy Volunteers of the Lowcountry has changed its name to The Literacy Center.

"We feel this new name ... more simply and clearly communicates who we are and what we do to a new generation of adult students," Jean Heyduck, the organization's executive director, said in a news release.

Through research, the organization discovered that many people found the previous name confusing, the release said.

The organization has helped Lowcountry adults learn to read, write, perform math and acquire speaking skills for 40 years.
