Troy Jinks

A Bluffton man was arrested Monday on Hilton Head Island and charged with possession with intent to distribute crack cocaine, according to the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies patrolling the Hilton Head Gardens apartment complex at 10:40 p.m. followed the smell of marijuana coming from the breezeway of a building, where they found a group that included Troy Nigel Jinks, 29, according to the warrant for his arrest.

When Jinks saw deputies approaching, he ran, ignored commands to stop and was caught after a brief chase, the warrant said. Deputies searched him and found a small plastic bag containing a substance suspected to be crack cocaine.

Jinks was also charged with intent to distribute crack within a half-mile of a school, second-degree assault and battery, and fleeing to evade arrest, according to the Beaufort County Detention Center log. He was being held Tuesday at the jail, with bail set at $51,092.

It was not clear whether others in the group were arrested. The investigation continued Tuesday.
