Qualifier for Nathan's July 4 hot dog eating contest to be held in Savannah

A hot dog eating contest that's part of the qualifying circuit for the annual July 4 hot dog eating contest on Coney Island will be at 11 a.m. June 7 on River Street in Savannah.

The Savannah contest will be a 10-minute, all-you-can-eat contest on the corner of Drayton and East Bay streets. It will feature top-ranked eaters, including No. 7-ranked Adrian Morgan of Baton Rouge, La., "Buffalo" Jim Reeves of Buffalo, N.Y., and Georgia champions Damien Boykin and Ronnie Harman, an Army specialist at Ft. Stewart.

The top male and top female finishers will earn a spot to compete in the finals at the Fourth of July International Hot Dog Eating Contest at the original Nathan's Famous on the corner of Surf and Stillwell avenues in Coney Island. Joey Chestnut of San Jose, Calif., set the world record by eating 69 hot dogs and buns in 10 minutes in 2013, and he will seek his eighth straight title this year. Sonya Thomas of Alexandria, Va., will defend her title as female champion; she has consumed a personal best of 45 hot dogs and buns in 10 minutes.
