A man told deputies he was robbed on Hilton Head Island Monday night by a man he had given a beer, according to the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies called to the Coligny Beach access about 8:45 p.m. found a 46-year-old man who said he had just been robbed by an unknown man, a news release said.

The victim was reportedly sitting at the beach access when the suspect approached him and asked for a drink. The two men talked and drank beer together for several minutes when the suspect suddenly punched the victim in the face, took his wallet and ran, the release said.

The victim appeared to be highly intoxicated, according to the release. Deputies searched the area and spoke with numerous patrons of a nearby bar but did not find the suspect.
