Tomato Festival promises messy fun July 12

A new festival in the Beaufort-area this summer promises to be messy fun.

The Tomato Festival will be July 12 at 5 Cane Island Farm Road in Beaufort, according to the festival's Facebook page,

Event organizers tout it as "10,000 pounds of Locally Grown Fun!" It plays off the area's strong history -- especially on nearby St. Helena Island -- of tomato farming and packing in the summer.

The event begins with a Tomato Bash Obstacle 5k, which will end with an "all-out tomato food fight," according to the Facebook page. Eye protection will be required for the Tomato Bash, and participants will be hosed afterward.

The festival will also include a Tomato Bash Fun Run for kids, a Ferris wheel, inflatable games and swings. A live concert is planned, but the entertainment has not been announced.

Tickets range from $35 for the 5k, $20 for the tomato fight, $10 for the Kids Zone with games and $5 for the fun run.

Proceeds will benefit the Wardle Family YMCA's annual scholarship campaign, according to the website. Sponsors include Plum Productions, the YMCA, Beaufort Memorial Hospital, the Beaufort Regional Chamber of Commerce, Picklejuice Productions, and Eat, Sleep, Play Beaufort.
