Author to give red knot presentation at Penn Center

Author Phillip Hoose will offer stories and songs about the life of red knot birds, chronicled in his book, "Moonbird," during a benefit for the S.C. Wildlife Federation at 6 p.m. May 17 at Penn Center on St. Helena Island.

During their migration each year from the southern tip of Argentina to the Canadian arctic, red knots stop along the Lowcountry coast to eat horseshoe crab eggs. Hoose will detail efforts to save the birds, whose population is declining.

The event is $20 per person and includes a Lowcountry boil dinner. A cash bar also will be available. Proceeds benefit the federation's education and conservation programs.

An optional historical tour of Penn Center will be at 4 p.m. for no additional charge.

To attend, contact Sara Green, the federation's director of education, at 803-609-4778. Sponsorships for the event are available by calling Harley Carpenter at 803-256-0670.
