High School Roundup, May 9: Hilton Head High eliminated from baseball playoffs

Hartsville scored four runs in the fifth thanks to two two-out errors and eliminated Hilton Head Island High from the Class 3-A playoffs with a 4-3 win.

The key play was came when Mat Clark misplayed a flyball behind first base with two outs and the bases loaded, allowing two runs to score.

The Seahawks (17-9), who have struggled at the plate all season, managed just four hits.

Dillon Heffner was 2 for 3, and Andrew Dill was 1 for 1 with a pair of runs scored and two walks. Michael Perez drove in two runs on a pair of fielder's choices. Clark had the other Seahawks hit.

Caleb Workman (1-1, 2 saves) took the complete-game loss.

SOFTBALL

SCISAA State Tournament: Thomas Heyward Academy (18-7) won it's first two games in the SCISAA state tournament in Lexington behind the pitching of Selice Daley, who struck out 27 batters in 12 innings.

"She had a great pitching performance in both games," Rebels coach Bob Layman said.

Thomas Heyward defeated Calhoun Academy 11-1 in five innings in the opener. Daley struck out 10 and allowed just two hits.

Morgan Peeples was 2 for 3 with 4 RBIs to lead the Rebels. Hannah Cannon was 2 for 3, Laynee Bryan was 2 for 2 and Zoe Mitchell was 2 for 2 wit two RBIs.

In the second game, Daley hurled a 5-0 shutout over the higher seeded Holly Hill Academy, striking out 17. She gave up just two hits again, hitting one batter and walking another.

Laynee Bryan led the way at the plate, going 3 for 3 with a pair of triples and an RBI. Liz Bunton was 2 for 4 and Kelsey Kelnhofer had a key pinch-hit RBI in the sixth inning.

The Rebels play at 9:30 a.m. Saturday against top-seeded Carolina Academy.
