Political environment needs a major change

newsroom@islandpacket.comMay 9, 2014

Our country is in serious trouble and we are approaching an election season.

I for one would like to see all the negative campaigning stopped.

I think a person should run on his or her platform and ideas and not the weakness of the opponent.

A recent article said U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham has $7 million in campaign cash. He is not the only politician with this kind of money.

I just don't think this is fair to the average person who may have something to contribute and would like to be of service.

They spend valuable time with fundraisers to enter the race and then do negative advertising. I want fresh ideas, not empty promises. Why spend time putting signs on every corner littering our town?

Why not spend this time brainstorming on how to make a difference?

We must have change in our political environment. It is no longer working, or fair.

In this age of social media, why can't we as citizens demand equal time for anyone who qualifies to run for office?

We can buy newspaper, television and radio advertising and have real debates to see who would represent us best.

The incumbents with millions of dollars can be required to apply these funds to the national deficit instead of having an unfair advantage.

We also should not allow laws that exempt our politicians. If it is good for the citizens of this country, it is good for them.

Let's put this country back on track now.
