Haven't we already paid for the port site?

newsroom@islandpacket.comMay 8, 2014

This is regarding the suggestion that a proposed 1 percent sales tax for capital projects in Beaufort County would include the purchase of the Port of Port Royal. Correct me if I am wrong, but haven't I and all other taxpaying citizens of South Carolina already paid for that land?

The way I see it, if the S.C. State Ports Authority no longer requires it for a port, it should be turned back to the taxpayers to use, not sold back to us again or sold to a private developer.

If it is sold to any private entity, that money should be returned to the taxpayer, not hoarded by government to squander as it sees fit.

We pay enough taxes now. Whatever happened to government of the people, by the people, for the people? The people need to wake up.

Being a proud, taxpaying, property owner in Port Royal and elsewhere in South Carolina, I feel that land should be given back to all of us taxpayers as a park. We the people paid for it.
