Sand Sharks baseball players honored by Sun Conference

The Sun Conference held its 2014 baseball awards banquet Thursday night on the eve of the Sun Conference Baseball Tournament, and USC Beaufort landed three players each on the All-Conference and All-Academic teams.

The Sand Sharks' entire starting outfield -- senior Blake Cilwick, junior Matt Kianka and sophomore JJ Crespo -- earned second-team All-Sun Conference recognition. Seniors Erik Armstrong and Jon Andrews and redshirt freshman Charlie McGinnis were named to the All-Academic Team.

It's the second consecutive second-team All-Conference nod for Cilwick, who batted .351 with 17 doubles, 28 RBIs and 13 stolen bases this season. Kianka led the team with a .379 average and added a homer run, 15 RBIs and 10 stolen bases in his first season at USCB after transferring from Iowa Western CC. Crespo had a standout season in the leadoff spot for the Sand Sharks, batting .340 while driving in 13 runs and swiping eight bags.

The Sun Conference Player of the Year award went to Southeastern's Bryan Muniz. The junior first baseman becomes the first Fire baseball player to earn the league's Player of the Year award. Muniz hit .396 on 74 hits with 23 doubles, a triple and four home runs for 39 RBIs while scoring 42 times and swiping 13 bases.

League Pitcher of the Year honors were claimed by St. Thomas' Eddie Cody. The senior right-hander posted an 8-1 overall record with a 1.57 ERA in 12 appearances for the Bobcats.

Randy Stegall of Embry-Riddle was selected as the Rick Smoliak Coach of the Year award recipient. The award, which had previously been unnamed, was dedicated in perpetuity to former Northwood head coach Rick Smoliak after he passed away earlier this spring. Stegall led the Eagles to their seventh consecutive Sun Conference regular-season title in 2014, finishing 22-5 in league play and 34-17 overall. The award is the fifth Sun Conference Coach of the Year award for Stegall, he has also been named the NAIA-Rawlings East Region Coach of the Year in each of the previous six seasons.

The league's Champion of Character award went to Warner sophomore Jimmy Diven. A sophomore from Spring Hill, Fla.,

The conference tournament begins on Friday at City of Palms Park.
