A Bluffton woman was raped by an acquaintance last month when she tried to give the man a ride to his Hilton Head Island home, according to a Beaufort County Sheriff's Office report.

The 27-year-old woman was leaving a North Forest Beach Drive bar about 2 a.m. April 18 when she was approached by a man she knew only by first name, according to the report. The man asked for a ride and directed her to Yacht Cove Drive, the report said.

Once there, the man climbed into the victim's seat, and when she resisted, choked her until she blacked out, according to the report. When the woman regained consciousness, the suspect was sexually assaulting her in a yard.

The woman fought the man off, ran to her car and drove away. She reported the incident Wednesday to a clinic and the Sheriff's Office, which is investigating.
