Make time today for a beach walk

newsroom@islandpacket.comApril 30, 2014

Dear neighbors, there are many sports to participate in here on the lovely Hilton Head Island.

Let's start with tennis. You always need someone to play with, then you need court time. And the way I see it, one arm gets more exercise than the other.

Then there is golf. You also need a set time, golf shoes, etc.

However, to walk the beach, you do not need any special shoes. Flip-flops, a hat and comfortable clothes are helpful to enjoy the walk, then away you go.

The ocean is available from sun up until sundown. Whether you are by yourself or with a group, the ocean welcomes you with the sound of the waves. Also you can stay for lunch. There's plenty of room for everyone. Or come for coffee time.

I call walking the beach my choice of sport. When I was a child, my mother would leave all of her duties and drive us kids to Newport Beach in Rhode Island. The occasional day on the beach recharged my mother's soul for work. It did the same for all four of my siblings. We would run into the waves to collect shells. To this day, some 50 years later, the sound of the waves soothes my heart.

Have you walked the beach lately? I am off today to walk the beach. Maybe I will see you there. Bradley Beach is great for kids with its cool playground. Folly Field is also super.
