A 76-year-old man was airlifted to a Savannah hospital Monday after his bicycle was hit by a truck on Hilton Head Island, according to a Beaufort County Sheriff's Office report.

Lowell Huff of Twin Mountain, N.H., was biking in a crosswalk near Palmetto Bay Road and Target Road shortly before 12:30 p.m. when he was struck by a Ford F-150, the report said. Huff was wearing a helmet, but suffered cuts to his face and elbow.

When his condition began to deteriorate, Huff was taken to Hilton Head Hospital and then flown to Memorial University Medical Center in Savannah, where he was listed in good condition Tuesday.

Surveillance video showed that the driver of the truck, 26-year-old Patrick Merritt of Hilton Head, did not stop before proceeding into the crosswalk, the report said. He was cited for failure to yield the right of way.

Merritt was also issued a notice of trespass to a Palmetto Bay Road convenience store after a manager told deputies that before the accident, Merritt spent 45 minutes in the store's bathroom and became hostile when employees checked on him, the report said.
