St. Helena Island relatives cheer for Delvin Choice on 'The Voice'

On Monday and Tuesday nights, St. Helena Island resident Geraldine Smalls is glued to the TV with the channel turned to NBC's "The Voice."

She watches to see her nephew, Delvin Choice, who has made it to the Top 10 round of the singing competition.

"I love it. We all knew that he was very talented," Smalls said. Smalls and Choice's grandmother, Ruth Reynolds, also of St. Helena, watch the show together to cheer on Choice.

Choice originally auditioned for Season 5 of "The Voice," but did not make it on the show.  When Choice returned to audition for Season 6, all four celebrity judges, Adam Levine, Shakira, Usher and Blake Shelton turned their chairs. Choice chose Levine as his coach.

A native of Greenville, Choice works at Starbucks and often sings coffee orders to customers. He also acts and sings in local theater productions.

His family in the Upstate have been hosting watch parties, and his parents, Hennie and Willie Choice, traveled to California for the live shows, Smalls said.

"We always knew he would do something with singing. It was just a matter of him getting out there and being recognized for his talent," she said.

Since being on the show, Choice has garnered a loyal fanbase, who call themselves Team Lobster, a reference to Choice's crazy, red-tinted hairstyles.

In person, Choice is a very happy person and is "always smiling," Smalls said.

She and Reynolds will be watching "The Voice" tonight at 8 p.m. to see if Choice advances to the Top 8.
