A motorcyclist died in a two-vehicle accident Monday in Bluffton, according to the S.C. Highway Patrol.

Shortly before 8:50 p.m., a 1977 Yamaha and 2002 Acura sedan wrecked on Bluffton Parkway near Goethe Road, Senior Trooper Hannah Wimberly said.

The driver of the Yamaha, 53-year-old Bluffton resident Joel Andrew Yates, was taken to Memorial University Medical Center in Savannah, where he died of his injuries, Beaufort County Coroner Ed Allen said.

He was not wearing a helmet, Wimberly said.

The driver of the Acura, 24-year-old Travis Barnwell of Bluffton, and his passenger, 24-year-old Kareem Kid of Bluffton, were wearing seat belts and were not injured, Wimberly said.

It was not clear Tuesday how the wreck occurred, Wimberly said. The Highway Patrol is investigating.
