Heed more voices in parking lot debate

newsroom@islandpacket.comApril 24, 2014

Who owns Beaufort? In regard to the recent disagreements over the proposed development of the downtown parking lot, this question is important.

Do residents of the city who have recently arrived from elsewhere have a say in this matter? Does the one who has lived here for 30 years and spent countless dollars in downtown Beaufort have a voice here?

How about the 80-year-old who was born in the Beaufort Memorial Hospital, served on the County Council, received all of his primary education at Beaufort Elementary and Beaufort High, who lives outside the city limits? Does he have a voice here?

I have been told that the citizens of the City of Beaufort own the City of Beaufort. If that is true, does that mean that a newcomer from Somewhere, USA, who lives within the city limits has more of a voice over the downtown parking lot's future than the lifelong resident who happens not to live within the city limits? I hope not.

It seems to me something as important as this issue should reflect the voices of all the residents of the county who love our city as much as those who live within its legal limits.
