J.P. Guimont, Will Rhys and Florence Lacey star in "The Outgoing Tide" with South Carolina Repertory Company.

The April 28 preview performance of the South Carolina Repertory Company's final production, "The Outgoing Tide," will benefit Hilton Head Island Safe Harbour. There will be a talkback with the actors following this performance.

Tickets are $26 for this performance.

Director: Brian P. Allen

Lead actors: Will Rhys, J.P. Guimont and Florence Lacey

The plot: In a cottage on Chesapeake Bay, Gunner has hatched an unorthodox plan to secure his family's future but meets with resistance from his wife and son, who have plans of their own. As the winter approaches, the three must find common ground and come to an understanding before the tide goes out.

The story behind the show: "I read about 'The Outgoing Tide' when it was being produced in Chicago with John Mahoney (Frasier) playing Gunner. I tracked down the author, Bruce Graham, and he sent me his beautiful play," Allen said. "I loved it and asked if he would grant Good Theater and South Carolina Repertory Company permission to produce it. He agreed even though the piece hadn't even been published."

Director's take: "As with any show, I knew casting would be the key to the success of the play," Allen says. "Will Rhys is an exciting actor with a long and varied career. I feel so fortunate to have found the perfect Gunner in Will. For the role of Peg, I immediately thought of my friend, Flo Lacey. We've worked together a couple of times over the years and, while she is primarily known for her musical theater roles, I knew Peg would be a perfect fit for her. Flo lights up the stage, and we are honored to have her here. J.P. Guimont is an Equity actor based in Maine with a long resume of excellent performances. At the audition he totally captured Jack, completing the perfect family."

Behind the scenes: "It is an honor to be presenting the Good Theater production of 'Tide' as the final show in the long and successful history of the South Carolina Rep," Allen says. "(Theater owners) Hank and Pat (Haskell) saw a production of Good People that I directed and asked me to direct a show for them. I sent a few suggestions, and together we chose 'Tide.' At the time no one knew this would be the final show in SCRC's history. What a fitting and appropriate show to close such an outstanding run."

Run dates: 8 p.m. April 28, 29, 30, May 1, 2, 3, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 and at 2 p.m. May 4, 10 and 11
