Bullpen, top of the order help Gamecocks defeat Upstate, 6-1

COLUMBIA -- A four-run fifth inning helped lift eighth-ranked South Carolina to a 6-1 win over USC Upstate on Wednesday night at Carolina Stadium.

Kyle Martin went 4 for 4 with an RBI, while Joey Pankake and Gene Cone each went 3 for 3 with two runs scored for the Gamecocks (32-10).

Sophomore right-hander Curt Britt (2-0) got the win in relief, working 3 2/3 scoreless innings. Senior righty Hunter Privette added three perfect innings of relief.

Starter Eric Birklund took the loss for USC Upstate (14-30).

South Carolina returns to action at 7 p.m. Friday, hosting Alabama in the first game of a three-game SEC series.
