What happened to the beautiful trees?

newsroom@islandpacket.comApril 23, 2014

Regarding your April 11 editorial about the new landscaping to spruce up U.S. 278 medians, the project is supposed to make the stretch of road beautiful in the eyes of the tourists driving to Hilton Head.

But when these tourists pass through the gateway to Hilton Head, what do they see? Well, for one thing, when they reach the median in front of the Hargray Communications building at 856 William Hilton Parkway, they will see a denuded space where once a block-long stretch of 30-foot-plus high holly trees once stood.

Could anyone please tell those of us who travel this stretch of road why all those beautiful trees had to be cut down? Was it just to erect a traffic signal at that location?

Could you please tell us whose idea it was to destroy this beautiful section of the median?
