The Mitchelville Preservation Project has received an award from the S.C. African American Heritage Commission.

The 2014 Preserving Our Places in History award goes to an organization for outstanding accomplishments in preserving and interpreting African American history and culture in South Carolina during the past year, according to a news release.

The Mitchelville Preservation Project was formed to preserve, protect and promote the heritage of Mitchelville, America's first settlement for freed slaves, which was on Hilton Head Island.
