After 2 1/2 years with the Port Royal Sound Foundation, executive director Judy Almand is stepping down effective June 30, according to a news release.

Almand was hired by the foundation as a consultant in Jan. 2012, and was brought aboard as executive director that fall. Almand will return to her nonprofit consulting business, the release said.

With the foundation's state-of-the-art maritime center set to open in June, Almand said "the time has come" for her to return to consulting.

"This has been a very rewarding experience for me," Almand said.

Longtime foundation volunteer and fundraising leader Jody Hayward will take Almand's place as executive director, chairman Michael Long said in the release.

Hayward will work alongside Almand starting May 1, before taking over as director July 1.

"I'm very excited to start this next phase of my career with the foundation," Hayward said in the release. "The maritime center will be such a wonderful addition to our community and an informative and enjoyable experience for all who visit the Lowcountry."

Hayward moved to the Lowcountry with her family in 2004 from Atlanta, where she worked as general manager of a large printing company. A graduate of the Georgia Institute of Technology, Hayward started work in 2012 at Caswell Investments, LLC in Beaufort.

"(Hayward) has a wealth of experience working with nonprofits, educators, volunteers and donors," Long said. "(Hayward's) background in marketing, management and development will particularly serve her well in her new position."
