It's time for town to study the studies

newsroom@islandpacket.comApril 18, 2014

Our town paid a consulting group $80,000 to tell us we should support our arts community with public dollars. The consultants say we need a new agency to manage arts groups' efforts. They also suggest we should pay for all of this with a higher real estate transaction fee. The end result is our town government paid someone to tell us that to support our arts community we need to grow our town government and raise taxes on the community. As Gomer Pyle would say, "Surprise, surprise, surprise."

I do feel our arts community is valuable. However, I don't believe this study produced anything creative or thought-provoking.

May I suggest we have a study on our studies. This new study should focus on whether our studies ever produce innovative ideas or a contrary view to the desire of town government.

I think this study would verify the opinion that most studies are a methodology to pay someone to support your view and an entity to blame if things go wrong.

I'll volunteer my time for this new study, and I promise not to be biased. Wink, wink.
