Prep Roundup, April 17: T.L. Hanna wins Seahawk Baseball Invitational

BASEBALL

T.L. Hanna 4, Palmetto 3 (8 innings): Joe Sanders' two-run double in the top of the eighth inning sent T.L. Hanna to the championship of the Seahawk Baseball Invitational at Hilton Head Island High.

Palmetto threatened in the bottom of the eighth, scoring a run on a double by Blake Cooper, but left the bases loaded.

Matt McDougald got the win for the Yellowjackets, who went 3-1 in the tournament. Palmetto also finished 3-1.

T.L. Hanna's Adam Hill, Tyler Miller and Sanders were chosen to the all-tournament team, as were Palmetto's Austin Todd and Evan Carter.

Langley (Va.) 10, Hillcrest 7: The Virginia squad finished in third place at the Seahawk Baseball Invitational. Hillcrest finished the tournament 1-3.

Langley's Jake McSteen and Kevin Wood, and Hillcrest's Landon Sayegh and Evan Gar were named to the all-tournament team.

Hilton Head Island High 5, Lewisville 2: Caleb Workman went 2 for 3 with an RBI double and also earned the save as the Seahawks finished 2-2 in their own tournament.

Mat Clark was 2 for 2 with an RBI, and Tommy Cooper was 2 for 4 with two RBIs. Troy Clifford got the win for Hilton Head High (13-6), which gets back to its region schedule at 7 p.m. Wednesday, hosting Hanahan.

Hilton Head High's Michael Perez was selected to the all-tournament team.

Lewisville went 0-4 in the tournament.

Hilton (N.Y.) 10, Centerville 0: The New Yorkers finished 2-2 in the Seahawk Baseball Invitational at Hilton Head Island High.

Centerville's Scott Walter was chosen to the all-tournament team.

Battery Creek: The Dolphins split a pair of games at the Wade Hampton tournament, blanking the host school 4-0 before falling 5-4 to Bluffton in the finale.

Against Bluffton, the Dolphins rallied with four runs in the top of the seventh to tie the score, but the Bobcats won with a game-winning single from Wes Gillespie.

Gillespie went 3 for 4 and scored a run to lead the Bobcats. Vinny Boni had two hits, including a double.

DeAnthony Moore and Craig Capano each had two hits to pace Battery Creek. Michael Jennings went 1 for 2 with a run scored.

In Battery Creek's opening win, Aaron Brantley got the complete-game victory. Brantley allowed five hits, walked four and struck out eight.

Clyde Parker, William Howell and Mark Hetrick each had hits for Battery Creek.

The Dolphins (12-7) return to action Monday at Academic Magnet. Both teams enter the game with 6-0 records in SCISAA Region 6-AA.

Thomas Heyward Academy 6, Bible Baptist 4: Michael Humbert struck out seven and allowed one earned run in six innings to earn the win for the Rebels.

Connor Driscoll pitched one inning for the save and also went 2 for 2 with four RBIs, including a three-run homer.

Anthony Sanders and Blake Bannon both were 3 for 4 with two runs scored for Thomas Heyward (10-4 overall, 2-1 region), which plays at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at St. Andrew's.

SOFTBALL

Bluffton 5, North Augusta 0: Courtney Smith tossed seven innings to earn the shutout win. She allowed three hits and fanned six.

Kim Kerby's three-run home run in the fifth was the big blow for Bluffton. Lilli Otten and Amanda Dart chipped in two hits each.

The Bobcats (12-1) travel to Thomas Heyward Academy on Friday.

Whale Branch 13, Estill 2 (5 innings): Olivia Walker improved to 7-4 with the mound victory, striking out eight in five innings of work.

Tanasia Campbell homered and Autumn Moon went 3 for 3 with two RBIs to power the Warriors' offense. Walker had two hits and scored twice.

The Warriors ( 7-5, 5-2 Region 5-A) next visit Battery Creek on Monday.
