Month of Earth Day events begins Saturday

Although the official, national Earth Day is Tuesday, Beaufort County agencies and organizations are gearing up for events spanning almost a full month.

The town of Port Royal gets the festivities started in northern Beaufort County on Saturday; most events in southern Beaufort County will take place April 26. Events include informational fairs, beach and waterway clean-ups, an oyster-reef building exercise, children's activities, and chances for residents to dispose of hazardous waste.

Events include:

  • Earth Day at the Port Royal Farmers Market, 8:30 a.m.. to noon, Naval Heritage Park, Ribaut Road, Port Royal. Information: 843-522-8100,
  • Earth Day events at Port Royal Crab Festival, noon to 5 p.m., Paris Avenue, Port Royal

  • Beaufort County Sheriff's Office Earth Day presentation, 11 a.m., Edgar C. Glenn Boat Landing on Lemon Island, S.C. 170 at Echotango Road, Okatie
  • Daufuskie Island Conservancy Earth Day, 5:30 to 9 p.m., Haig Point Club House, Dafuskie. Information: 843-842-3456,

  • Hunting Island Beach Sweep, 10 a.m., Hunting Island State Park. Information:
