Beaufort's beauty is what they want

newsroom@islandpacket.comApril 13, 2014

I have been following the debate over the proposed development of the Beaufort City Marina parking lot, and I'm a bit confused.

What happened to the Henry C. Chambers Waterfront Park restoration and improvement plan that was approved a number of years ago? Phase one was completed and the park is, indeed, beautiful. The details may be a bit fuzzy, but I recall that subsequent phases were supposed to include a tour bus drop-off and pick-up point and restrooms adjacent to the memorials, then a great lawn and amphitheater where the parking lot currently sits.

I believe that budget constraints required the subsequent phases to be postponed, but I don't recall that the plan was officially scrapped. That plan was approved with public support because it took advantage of the natural beauty that exists right there for all to see.

Comments I routinely get from tourists suggest that's exactly why they visit Beaufort. That's what sets us apart.
