Two people are dead after an apparent murder-suicide at a residence on Brown's Island Road in Sheldon Township, according to Beaufort County Coroner Ed Allen.

The deaths were reported by neighbors about 7 p.m. Thursday, and are under investigation by Beaufort County Sheriff's Department, according to Lt. Jim Walton.

Allen confirmed a couple died, but would not disclose the names Thursday night because family members were still being notified.

Neighbors said an elderly couple has lived in the home for about a decade. They said they had not seen the two in several days.

Allen would not disclose the cause of death for either person, citing an on-going investigation. He was attempting Thursday night to schedule autopsies for Friday.

When the couple died also was under investigation Thursday night, Allen and Walton said. It was also not clear when the couple was last in contact with anyone, they said.

Deputies said the initial report came in as a health and welfare check. More information about the investigation and the incident will be released Friday morning, Walton said.
