Phone scams reported in Beaufort County

loberle@beaufortgazette.comApril 9, 2014

Two Beaufort County residents reported receiving phone calls from a man who claimed they had missed court dates and needed to send money to avoid arrest.

The caller identified himself as "Lt. James Hall" of the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office. There is no such officer, and deputies will never solicit financial information over the phone, according to the Sheriff's Office.

Neither victim attempted to wire money. There would have been no way to recover the money if they had, according to the Sheriff's Office. Similar scams surfaced in Beaufort County in August and October.
