Tornado watch issued for Beaufort, Jasper counties

The National Weather Service has issued a tornado watch for Beaufort and Jasper counties through 9 p.m. tonight.

Showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop this afternoon, according to a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration forecast. The storms could be severe, with damaging winds and heavy rain totaling 1 to 2 inches overnight.

A tornado watch means conditions will be favorable for the development of severe thunderstorms capable of producing tornadoes.

Temperatures are predicted to drop to 63 degrees overnight.
