Free tax help offered in Beaufort County

newsroom@islandpacket.comApril 6, 2014

The clock is winding down on the April 15 tax deadline.

But if you haven't done your taxes -- and you're stalling because you don't know how to fill out the forms -- there's help available.

And it's free.

Several nonprofit organizations in Beaufort County are offering to do residents' taxes at no cost:

VOLUNTEER INCOME TAX ASSISTANCE

Free income-tax preparation is available to residents of Beaufort and Jasper counties at more than a dozen locations through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program.

To participate, taxpayers should visit one of the program's locations -- they can be found at www.vitalowcountry.org -- and bring a complete copy of their 2013 tax return, any 2013 property-tax receipts, information on deductions, a copy of their Social Security card, valid photo ID, and bank account and routing number information for depositing any refunds.

Participants should also bring 2013 tax forms, including W-2; 1099INT and 1099DIV; 1098 mortgage interest; 1099R and SSA-1099; and 1098-T tuition payment statements.

For more information, contact Dave Cunningham at 302-598-0896 or davecunn@gmail.com, or go to the program's website.

PARRIS ISLAND TAX CENTER

The Parris Island tax center is providing free income-tax filing assistance to Beaufort-area military personnel.

The center, in building 911 on Cuba Street, is available to active-duty service members, retirees, relatives and activated reservists for help with both state and federal returns.

The tax center will be open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekdays for appointments, except Mondays and Wednesdays from 1 to 4 p.m., which will be for walk-ins only. The center will remain open until April 30.

Filers are asked to bring their military identification; Social Security cards for each family member claimed on the return; W-2, W-2G, 1099-R and 1099-Misc forms; last year's return; and any other documents related to income.
