Hilton Head church to plant flamingos in area yards as part of fundraiser

In this photo from last year's fundraiser, a typical installation of flamingos is shown.

To raise money for a mission trip to Tanzania, St. Luke's Church will have a "Flock a Friend" fundraiser. For $25 church volunteers will plant a flock of pink flamingoes on any lawn for the day at homes and businesses on Hilton Head Island and in the Moss Creek area.

The flock is delivered in the morning and gathered up at the end of the day. The flamingos come with a note explaining the fundraiser and assuring the recipient that the gift has nothing by good intentions. The fundraiser begins April 6 and continues through Memorial Day weekend with the exception of Easter weekend, which coincides with the RBC Heritage Golf Tournament this year.

The mission trip is scheduled for late June. The largest cost of the trip -- the flights to Africa -- can range from $2,000 to $2,500 per person. This year, the team will be traveling with a medical team to the remote village of Kibindu, helping to refurbish a chapel attended by secondary school children and participating in a local revival and baptism ceremony.

Flock reservations will be accepted at St. Luke's Church during coffee hour each Sunday through May 25. A reservation form will also be available on the St. Luke's Church website, www.stlukeshhi.org, throughout the fundraiser. Details: 843-785-4099 or www.stlukeshhi.org
