One person was hospitalized Saturday morning after a car accident that tied up roads in a Hilton Head Island community for about two hours.

An SUV traveling on Whooping Crane Way in Hilton Head Plantation about 8:20 a.m. struck the back of a trailer and then collided head-on with a tree, according to battalion chief Mick Mayers of the Hilton Head Island Fire & Rescue Division.

The driver was transported to Hilton Head Hospital with non-life threatening injuries, Mayers said.

As a result of the wreck, the trailer came unhitched from its truck and overturned, spilling screws and other debris into the road. Whooping Crane Way was closed until about 10:30 a.m., as crews cleared the debris, Mayers said.
