Prep Roundup, March 27: Hilton Head girls soccer team wins battle with Wando, 2-1

Hilton Head Island High 2, Wando 1: In a battle between two defending state champions, the Hilton Head Island High School girls soccer team pulled out a 2-1 win over Wando on Thursday night.

The Seahawks, last year's Class 3-A champ, got second-half goals from Amanda Green and Claudia Murphy to get the win over Wando, the reigning 4-A champ.

Sam Wammock made six saves in goal. Lexi Lainhart, Natalie Mlodzinski, Rebecca Johnston, Claire Kent and Brennan O'Gorman led the defense.

Hilton Head High (7-1) hosts Parkview (Ga.) at 5 p.m. Friday.

Battery Creek 7, North Charleston 0: Taniqua Mungin had two goals and an assist, and Callie Calder also scored two goals to lead the Dolphins to a Region 6-AA win.

Kim Vigil added a goal and two assists, Tiffany Nova had a goal and an assist, Caroline Vido scored a goal, and Missy Sharew had an assist. Taylor Jones made five saves for Battery Creek (4-1 overall, 4-1 region), which hosts Burke at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.

BOYS SOCCER Bluffton 4, Summerville 2: Akeel Crooks scored twice and Sage Cross and Clay Trlina added single goals to lead the Bobcats past Region 8-AAAA foe Summerville. Pablo rios had an assist for unbeaten Bluffton (7-0, 1-0). "Our attitudes are fantastic," Bluffton coach Joshua Fox said. "They're keeping they're heads down. They know we have a tough string of games coming up." Stephen Dimaria had 17 saves in goal. Battery Creek 3, North Charleston 0: John Saullo scored twice, Daulton Bowers added a goal and Erik Barbosa had two assists as the Dolphins (4-2, 3-1) shut out a Region 6-AA foe. Miguel Mejia (three saves) and John Lee (five saves) combined for the shutout in goal.


Beaufort High 157, Bluffton 161, Hilton Head Island High 165: Josh Fickes shot a 34 to earn medalist honors at Island West in Bluffton, leading Beaufort High to the win. Fickes was five shots better than his closest competitor. It's his fourth straight individual win.

Hilton Head Island 20, Savannah Christian 8: The Seahawks, led by five goals apiece from Abby Ogden and Savannah Reier, close the regular season at 10-4 and await their playoff destination.

Tristyn Shaeffer and Jazzie Morgan had three goals apiece, Kirsten Wartko scored twice and Carson Kendrick and Katy Bautista each had a goal.

Jordan Balay (two saves) and Makena Avichouser (one save) combined in goal for the Seahawks.


Whale Branch 24, Bethune-Bowman 12, 5 innings: The Warriors gave Olivia Walker (5-2) plenty of run support and she responded by allowing no earned runs and striking out three in a three-inning start to earn the win and move Whale Branch to 5-3, 4-1 in Region 5-A.

Nya Simmons and Tanasia Campbell each went 4 for 4 with two RBIs. Campbell had a home run. Marissa Roberts was 3 for 3, while Autumn Moon and Witney Salters were each 2 for 2. Moon had a home run, while Salters drove in a pair.

Whale Branch plays at Wade Hampton at 6:30 p.m. Thursday.

Thomas Heyward Academy 11, Orangeburg Prep 2: Freshman Hannah Cannon was 3 for 5 with two home runs, a double and five RBIs to lead the Rebels to a lopsided win on the road.

Zoe Mitchell also went 3 for 5, while Kelsey Kelnhofer, Liz Bunton, Selice Daley and Morgan Peeples had two hits apiece for Thomas Heyward (4-2), which piled up 15 hits as a team.

Daley limited Orangeburg Prep to four hits and one earned run, while striking out 13 and walking one.

Thomas Heyward plays Monday at Dorchester Academy, before returning home Tuesday to host Cuyahoga Valley (Ohio) for a doubleheader.

Middle school: Beaufort Middle 16, McCracken 0


Beaufort High 7, Ashley Ridge 0: The Eagles remain perfect in Region 8-AAAA. Beaufort High hosts Colleton County on Tuesday.

Hilton Head Island High 6, James Island 0: The Seahawks remained undefeated on the season, opening their region schedule with an easy win.

The Seahawks (4-0 overall, 1-0 Region 8-AAA) will face a tougher test at 4 p.m. Monday, when they host Hilton Head Prep.
